Do or do not, there is no try.

Richard and I stopped by the Brown Ranch near Bismarck, ND to visit with Paul Brown on our way home from the Baker, MT school. We met Paul when he attended our school in Arcola, SK last August. He’s also setting us up with a two day stockmanship school in Bismarck November 16-17.

Paul and Richard discussing a new and better corral design.

Then we went out to see his cattle bale grazing.

They set up the bales in the fall so don’t need to fire up machinery during the (usually, just not this winter!) cold and snow of winter.

Richard stepped into the cows and got some good movement with just a couple of steps.

Here come more cows who had been at the water point.

Richard and Paul discussing the feeding system. Notice the mostly grazed bale spread over the ground feeding the soil microbes and building new and better soil.

Here’s a long view of the pasture filled with bales ready for the cows (you can see the cattle in the middle, the darker area).

  1. I have discovered Brown Ranch a couple of months ago. Paul and his father have You Tube videos and presentations on line. They make an amazing team and their holistic view, IF implemented in at least 75% of the farms in the world, COULD SAVE THE PLANET and farmer’s shirts/life. I am glad to know that Tina and Richard (the best in cattle handling) are staying in touch and exchanging valuable info with the best in land presevation/improvement. 🙂
