Read this good article on lameness in dairy cows and how good stockmanship can mitigate it. From the article:

Dr Chesterton said he had learned poor stockmanship exaggerated wear on the cows’ feet. Cows which were afraid of their handlers were more likely to suffer damage to their feet.
