More secrets of knowledge have been discovered by plain and neglected men than by men of popular fame. And this is so with good reason. For the men of popular fame are busy on popular matters.

Because neither Richard or I like to mow our lawn, and because we have all these handy “automatic” lawnmowers, we do what we call “weed and feed” with our cattle.

Today I’m using our newly (exactly a week ago) weaned calves to do the work for me. I set up polywire around my flowers and shrubs in all sorts of jigs and jogs to get the most of our grazing. It was so nice to go out in the pasture, drive the calves up (got a nice buck-out along the way!), and put them into this maze to do my lawn-mowing for me!

Weaning was done within about a day and a half because Richard drove them properly. We sorted them off at the gate with the cows going into a new paddock and then drove the calves into our training pen right beside the cows. It took most of the afternoon before they even realized they were separated! We leave them “fence-line” overnight and then drive the cows away to the farthest point on our 80 acres the next morning. Then Richard properly drove the calves through that day to take their minds off their loss and let them he was going to provide for all their needs now. Then he continued driving them for the next days to keep their minds right and also continue their training process. That’s what made it SO EASY for me to drive them up and into the yard to do my mowing for me!
