Low-stress handling does not mean working livestock slow. I call this ‘slow-stressful handling.’

— Lynn Locatelli, DVM

“When people talk or write, it is about low-stress stock handling. The words “proper stockmanship” are almost never used. When working animals it should be about the proper pressure applied at the proper angle not about trying to use low stress. It isn’t possible to use low stress or high stress to work animals. Low or high stress will only be the end result of the stockmanship used, not what was used to interact with the animals. It is possible to create stress or relieve stress, but it would be difficult to use stress to get work done with animals.”
